Professor Richard Roberts

Professor Roberts was one of the first student to pass through the Department of Religious Studies established by Professor Ninian Smart at Lancaster University in 1967.  He went on to study Theology at Cambridge with Professor Donald McKinnon, before moving to Edinburgh to research for a PhD supervised by Professor Thomas F. Torrance.  He lectured in theology at the Universities of Leeds and Durham before becoming M.B. Reckitt Research Fellow at Lancaster (1989-91) where he convened the project Religion and the Resurgence of Capitalism.  In 1990, he was appointed Professor of Divinity at the University of St. Andrews, and then in 1995 returned to a Chair in Religious Studies at Lancaster.
