Mr Tom Hoffman
Tom Hoffman read Law at the University of Exeter and is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales. He was an international banker from 1971 until his retirement in 2003. Since then he has held a number of non-executive banking appointments.
He was elected to the Court of Common Council of the City in 2002. He is a Governor of the Museum of London, Governor of the Barbican Centre, Governor of the City of London School for Girls (Chairman 2003-06), Trustee of the City of London Festival, and Chairman of the Trustees of Stour Festival in Kent. Since 2003 he has been engaged with London's leading teaching hospitals, from 2004 until 2011 as a Governor of King's College Hospital, and since 2012 as a Governor of Guy's & St Thomas' Hospital. He is also a Trustee of the Sons and Friends of the Clergy Corporation.
He previously served for many years as a Member of the Council of the University of Exeter, Governor of Birkbeck College (of which he is an Honorary Fellow), Chairman of the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, Deputy Governor of The Honourable The Irish Society, Chairman of the Board of the London Festival Orchestra, Chairman of the Advisory Board of The Sixteen Choir & Orchestra, and Trustee of the Christ's Hospital Foundation.
As a Common Councilman of the City of London he is currently a Member of the Finance Committee, Investment Committee, Culture Heritage & Libraries Committee, Markets Committee, and the Gresham Committee of which he was Chairman 2009-12. He is a Past Master of the Tylers & Bricklayers' Company, and Honorary Treasurer of the Guildhall Historical Association who published his Paper on The Rise & Decline of Guilds in Great Britain and Ireland. His four volume Bibliography on the Guilds of Great Britain and Ireland is published on the Birkbeck website.
