As part of the Literary Londoners series, this lecture focuses on Elizabethan dramatists like Thomas Dekker and Thomas Heywood, and what relationship their works had to the city of London, in particular the emergent capitalist system. One such work which is explored in this lecture casts the real life Sir Thomas Gresham, founder of the Royal Exchange and Gresham College, as a “citizen hero”.
