Walk into any church or cathedral today and you might hear women singing, preaching, praying publicly. In a society where the relevance of the church is constantly questioned, has this change made any difference and does it matter?

Ordained as a priest in 1996, the reverend Lucy Winkett is rector of St James's Piccadilly and was formerly canon precentor of St Paul's Cathedral, London.
She writes on Christian themes in various publications and is a contributor on Radio 4's Thought for the Day. Her book Our Sound is our Wound was published by Continuum in 2010.
