Gifts of shares

Share giving is the most generous tax relief available to donors, combining relief on income and capital gains tax. In the UK, share gifts qualify for tax relief equal to the market value of the shares on the day the gift is made, including associated costs such as broker fees. The tax relief can be claimed for the year in which the gift is made.

For example, a gift to Gresham College of £1,000 worth of shares, made by a donor who is a higher rate taxpayer, will reduce their income tax by up to £500 for the year. Additionally, the donor will not have to pay any Capital Gains Tax (CGT) on any increase in the value of the shares since they were bought. However, if the shares have gone down in value, it is not possible to use this loss to offset any other CGT liabilities.

You can donate shares to Gresham College via Charities Aid Foundation (CAF).

If you would like to donate in this way, please contact us at support@gresham.ac.uk or call +44(0) 7827 068129.

Payroll Giving

Donate straight from your pay before tax.

Donations are taken from your pay or pension after your National Insurance contributions are removed, but before Income Tax is calculated and deducted. For further information and how to set up your donation through Charities Aid Foundation (CAF)’s Payroll Giving Scheme visit: Give with your payroll with Give As You Earn | CAF

Company Matched Funding

Boost your donation through matched giving.

By donating through a company matched giving scheme, you could double the value of your donation to Gresham College.

Each employer will vary as to what they offer. Some will match your donation up to a certain amount, others to the full amount you donate.

If you are unsure if your company runs a matched giving scheme, contact your HR department or Corporate Social Responsibility Manager to find out if your employer will match your donation to Gresham College.

If your workplace doesn’t currently offer a matching scheme, why not encourage them to set one up, or make a one-off donation to Gresham College?

Gift Aid (UK Taxpayers only)

Please remember you can enhance your donation by as much as 25% at no extra cost  - if you are a UK taxpayer by filling in the Gift Aid form.

By declaring your eligibility for Gift Aid, you increase the value of your donation by 25%. You can do so by completing our Gift Aid Form  and email it to support@gresham.ac.uk. You are eligible for gift aid if you pay enough UK income tax or capital gains tax to cover the amount to be reclaimed on all your charitable donations in the appropriate tax year.

If you pay the higher rate of income tax, then you can also claim back the difference between the higher rate of tax (40%) and the basic rate of tax (20%) on the gross value of your donation. If you earn over £150,000 per year, you can claim the difference between the additional rate of tax (45%) and the basic rate of tax (20%) on the gross value of your donation.
