Do we have a true self?

It has become rather unfashionable among philosophers to think that we have a self at all. But that is because the 17th and 18th centuries offered such a thin concept of selfhood that there is little reason to believe in such a thing. The first thousand years of Western Philosophy gave us a rich variety of concepts of self, many of them useful. Some were concepts of self as we are, some as we might be. They asked also what makes us the same self from one time to another. Or are we not the same self at different times?
