The South Sea Bubble of 1720

Dr Helen Paul

The London stock market boomed and crashed in 1720. The financial bubble is known to posterity as the South Sea Bubble.

In the three hundred years since, the bubble has been much misunderstood – this lecture separates fact from myth and aims to move beyond simplistic ideas of “gambling mania”.

Helen is a Lecturer in Economics and Economic History at the University of Southampton. She is particularly interested in early modern economic history: the Financial Revolution; Atlantic history; the South Sea Bubble, and the Navy’s role within the economy.
