Accessibility at Barnard's Inn Hall

Barnard's Inn Hall

At Barnard’s Inn Hall, we are committed to making our lectures as accessible and welcoming as possible for all visitors. As a historic venue, some features of the building and its surroundings present practical considerations, and we strongly encourage guests with specific access requirements to contact us in advance so we can make appropriate arrangements. Our team is always happy to discuss individual needs and provide guidance to ensure your visit to Gresham College is comfortable and enjoyable.

Reaching us

The nearest tube station is Chancery Lane, served by the Central Line. It has escalators but no lift. A little further away is Farringdon station served by the Elizabeth Line and national rail which has lifts and escalators from platform to street level.

Taxis are able to stop briefly on High Holborn outside the main entrance and there are several bus stops just a few feet away. You can reach Gresham College via bus routes 8, 17, 46, 59 and133 which all stop at ‘High Holborn / Chancery Lane’ stops.

There are two car parks in the vicinity:

Location and approach

The entrance to Gresham College is via a gated archway and corridor off High Holborn. The route is wide enough to accommodate wheelchair access. The approach to the main entrance is level; however, due to the historic nature of the venue, some areas paved with older flagstones may be slightly uneven. Visitors are advised to take care.

There is limited weather protection outside the main entrance to the Hall, but we will endeavor to admit wheelchair users before the main audience wherever possible.

Our overflow room - used when the main Hall is full - is located downstairs and is not recommended for visitors with limited mobility.

Lecture Hall Access

Our venue is wheelchair accessible; however, we kindly ask that you contact us before the lecture so we can reserve an appropriate space for you. We can accommodate up to two wheelchair users at each lecture with advance notice, and there are also designated seats available for those with limited mobility.

Toilets and Ancillary Facilities

We have an accessible WC at the front of the lecture hall, but this may not be accessible during the course of the lecture.

Assistive Listening

Barnard's Inn Hall has an Auracast system for anyone who needs it. People with Auracast-enabled headphones, earbuds and hearing aids can use their own devices to connect, while for those with a Telecoil in their hearing aid, an Auracast receiver and personal neckloop can be borrowed. Wired headphones are also available. These must be returned at the end of each lecture.

Staff Support and Assistance

Staff are trained in first aid, and a designated duty manager is present at each lecture. Our first aid kit is located in the main office of Gresham College, in the building across the corridor from the Hall.

Lockers and Bicycle Storage

We do not provide lockers at Gresham College, and any items left in the alcove outside the Hall are left entirely at the owner’s risk. Please note that we also do not have facilities for visitors to store or secure bicycles at Barnard’s Inn Hall.
