Dr Ranita Chatterjee

Dr Ranita Chatterjee is Senior Lecturer in Film and Television Studies at the University of Exeter. Her interdisciplinary research spans film history, film theory, and screen practice, with particular interests in film history, twentieth-century screen cultures, the cinemas of India, colonial film in the British Empire, creative industries, and transnational film circulation. 

Dr Chatterjee is currently completing a book-length manuscript, Calcutta Chronicles: Film, City and the Transnational Journeys of Early Indian Cinema. The project offers a media-archaeological investigation of early cinema in India, tracing its development from its introduction in the 1890s through to the studio era of the 1930s. Focusing on the emergence of cinema in Calcutta, the book examines the regional, national, and transnational networks that shaped film culture across colonial South Asia and the Indian Ocean World.
