Quantum science has been one of the most successful and useful theories ever invented. Indeed quantum technology was added as the ninth of the original eight great technologies.
Where do we get our mathematical symbols from? Why is the set of integers called ℤ ? When was the equals sign first used? How about zero? Good notation tends to catch on quickly, whereas bad notation can obscure beautiful theory.
Dr Peter Neumann is Emeritus Fellow of the Queen's College, Oxford. He is a former President of the British Society for the History of Mathematics and was the Chairman of the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust between 1996 and 2004.
