Professor Cahal McLaughlin

Cahal McLaughlin is a filmmaker and Professor Emeritus of Film Studies at Queen’s University Belfast.  His most recent films include 'We Fight For This Land: Ka’apor and Quilombola Communities in Brazil' (2024) and 'Right Now I Want to Scream: Police and Army Killings in Rio, the Brazil Haiti Connection (2020). His publications include Challenging the Narrative: Documentary Film as Participatory Practice in Conflict Situations' (2023).

Cahal is also the director of the Prisons Memory Archive, a collection of 300 hours of audiovisual recordings with those who experienced the prison system in the North of Ireland during the political conflict commonly known as the ‘Troubles’. The archive, which includes prison officers, prisoners, chaplains, tutors, social workers and visitors, is hosted the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland, with a website of selected highlights, including edited films, at qub.ac.uk/prisonsmemoryarchive/
