Roger Ridsdill Smith


Roger Ridsdill Smith is the Head of Structural Engineering at global design firm Foster + Partners. 

He graduated in Engineering from Cambridge University and started his career in Paris. He moved to London to join Ove Arup and Partners, becoming a director there in 2003. While at Arup, Roger worked on numerous projects with Foster + Partners, including the Citibank tower in Canary Wharf, Faustino Winery in Spain, and the Millennium Bridge in London. 

In 2011, Roger joined Foster + Partners to grow the practice’s in-house structural engineering team. Roger’s current tall building projects include the JP Morgan headquarters and 425 Park Avenue in New York, four towers in Lusail, Qatar, and the new 388m headquarters for China Merchants Bank in Shenzhen. 

Roger is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at Imperial College in London. He has won the Royal Academy of Engineering 2010 Silver Medal, and the 2017 Milne Medal. He sits on the British Standard committee B/517/1/20 for the National Concrete code and is a member of the editorial panel of the Institution of Civil Engineer's 'Structures and Buildings Journal’.
