From the Lips of Bells: The Humanisation of Bells

Taken down from its tower and laid on the ground, the bell of a great church would seem an inhuman thing: massive, cold and thoroughly dead. But that is not how people in the Middle Ages spoke of bells, and (under their influence) it is not how we speak of them now.
