As the European/Japanese Bepi Columbo mission arrives at Mercury, beginning its mission of exploration of this scorching, enigmatic world, this lecture considers some big mysteries. How did the Moon form? Why does Venus rotate so slowly? And why is Mars a planet of two halves?
The answer to each question lies in a new picture of the early Solar System, a chaotic place where violence is common, and where the final outcome could easily have been very different indeed.
