Professor Victoria Baines Delivers 18th Gresham College Lecture

Professor Victoria Baines

This week sees the final lecture by Professor Victoria Baines in her role as IT Livery Company Professor of Information Technology.

A specialist in cybersecurity, digital harms, and digital diplomacy, Professor Baines has delivered 18 outstanding lectures over her three-year tenure. Her talks have explored a wide range of issues relevant to today’s digital society — from fake news, and the metaverse to cybercriminals, and robots.

We are delighted that she will stay on at Gresham College next year as Visiting Professor of Technology and Society, and will also be speaking at our Festival of Music Ideas in June.

Acting Provost, Professor Sarah Hart, said: “Professor Baines has brought clarity and insight to some of the most complex issues in our digital world.

“Her ability to engage audiences with both depth and accessibility has been remarkable and her lectures have been not only informative but have also empowered our audience in their use of technology.

Richard Smith, Executive Director of Gresham College, said: “We’re delighted that Professor Baines is staying on to help us trial a new style of lecture content: three lecture-length, documentary style videos

“This online series will illuminate how technology continues to shape — and be shaped by — the political landscape, environmental challenges, and the creative arts.”
