Most formal City markets and related institutions have a cooperative origin, but recent events have shown the difficulties such organizations may encounter when faced with difficult decisions bringing potentially negative consequences for their members. Has mutuality permanently damaged these institutions or has it been a vital means to an end? Should the exchanges and/or clearing houses of the future ever be mutual organisations?
