Several countries are bringing together genetic databases and individual medical records with the hope of rationalising health care - so-called pharmacogenomics. The sale of the Icelandic database to a private company has generated a tremendous conflict amongst the scientific and clinical community. Such conflicts can clarify otherwise hidden problems of privacy, patients' rights, informed consent and the commodification of bio-information.
