Professor of Rhetoric

Rhetoric

The Professorship of Rhetoric, is open to scholars in the arts, humanities (apart from Music), and the social sciences. The College is seeking a Professor who will continue to educate and inspire audiences, building on the 400-year-old traditions of Gresham College, while also developing innovative ideas for the transmission of knowledge.

We are particularly interested in candidates looking to explore the History of Ideas, especially in political, philosophical or literary arenas. The candidate will have a record of high-level scholarship, distinction in their field, and a demonstrable ability to communicate the complexity of the subject to a broad, interested audience.

The ten-term appointment (that is, three academic years plus one term) requires the Professor to present six lectures each academic year. For the 10th term, we invite candidates to propose two final lectures, or something creative such as an interdisciplinary symposium involving other colleagues.

Gresham Professors also participate in College life, attending the Academic Board, participating in promotion and outreach, attending social events and acting as ambassadors for the College. The post offers excellent opportunities to widen public exposure for the successful candidate. The College encourages applications from all backgrounds and communities.
