Memories of a Gresham College Enthusiast

How did I manage not to notice Gresham College before retirement? I have lived and worked in central London for most of my life, but it was only by chance I encountered the College when I picked up a leaflet during a visit to the Museum of London. What a cornucopia of delights awaited me!

The lectures cover many subjects, and the speakers excel in delivering straightforward explanations of difficult concepts and ideas. There is the option to watch the lectures online for convenience, as well as explore the sprawling archive of past lectures that goes back decades.

Yet I prefer attending in-person, where the presence of a lecturer before a live audience provides the opportunity for touches of humour and empathy. What also makes Gresham College’s lectures so unusual, and appealing is the sense of community with fellow attendees. I’ve had many lovely exchanges with like-minded souls! Even on the occasions where I’ve not spoken with anyone, the welcome provided by staff, and speakers enhanced the visitor experience for me.

So where next? The good ship Gresham College sails on into the twenty-first century, taking advantage of new techniques, while sustaining a tradition of scholarship offered – with a huge sense of good-will – to anyone who engages with it. The ship is soundly built and has evolved skilfully over the centuries: long may she prosper and continue to delight us!
