Gresham College Professor gives solid advice on virtual networks

Professor Victoria Baines

We were delighted to see Professor Victoria Baines appear on the BBC Sound's Sliced Bread programme, commenting on the growth of virtual private networks (VPNs).

The former Gresham Professor of IT and current Visiting Professor of Technology & Society, was quizzed on the increasing popularity of VPNs and the grey areas opened up by the use this technology.

She explained how VPNs can help to disguise your online location but warned that users might not be complying with the law: "You're basically breaking the terms of service, I would have thought, of lots of the services that you are using." she said.

The issue, Professor Baines continued, shows how technology can push the boundaries of what is currently accepted: "This is one of those areas where the internet has challenged some of our generally held conceptions of what it's okay to do and what it's not okay. So, tech does tend to challenge our notions of what is legal and what isn't."
