Open House Festival 2026

More than 500 people visited Barnard's Inn Hall over three days as part of the Open House festival 2026.

The event was an opportunity to learn more about the history of Gresham College, the role that Sir Thomas Gresham played within the story of the City of London, and how Barnard's Inn Hall has changed hands over the years. 

Visitors could explore the Hall, used for lectures, appreciate the stained glass, and look at the lists of previous professors. 

On the Friday, there were short talks looking at the intwined history of Sir Thomas, Gresham College, the Mercers' Company, the City of London Corporation and Barnard's Inn Hall. 

While Gresham College is nearly 430 years old, Barnard's Inn is even older; while the majority of the site dates back to the 13th century, parts are thought to date back to at least Saxon times. 

Feedback from visitors was good, with many appreciative comments left. 

"We really enjoyed welcoming so many people over three days for Open House," said Head of Fundraising and Engagement at Gresham College, Celia Blakeway-Phillips. 

"We are very proud of Gresham College and Sir Thomas' vision of providing free academic lectures for anyone who has a thirst for learning. Being able to let people into Barnard's Inn Hall gave them a rare chance to discover the fascinating histories of two historic London institutions.
