The debate on standards in the City, the extent of transparency, and even the nature of corporate governance raises major questions about the ways in which the rules which guide behaviour are understood and translated to action. This lecture explores the ways in which the new learning, especially the debate on ethics, translates into the type of education, training and development which is needed to establish or maintain appropriate behaviour. Particular attention will be paid to the government’s interest in exploring the value, within education and training, of a new management code, incorporating ethical and environmental responsibilities as well as a commitment to learning.
