Gresham Professors in the Media

Professors Clive Stafford Smith, Melissa Lane and Daniel Susskind

Professor Melissa Lane helps podcast celebrate its 500th episode!

Gresham College's Professor of Rhetoric has made a guest appearance on long-running philosophy podcast, The History of Philosophy Without Any Gaps

Hosted by Peter Adamson, Professor of Philosophy at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München and at King's College London, it takes listeners through the history of philosophy, looking at the ideas, lives and historical context of the major philosophers as well as the lesser-known figures of the tradition. Periods covered includes Classical Greek and later antiquity, Medieval and Renaissance histories, as well as focuses on India, Africana, and China.

To mark the milestone, it is releasing five special episodes on topics that had been missed out earlier in the run.

Ancient Greek was the focus for Professor Melissa Lane when she guested on Episode 500b: she spoke about historians Herodotus and Thucydides, and their relationship to Plato.

Professor Lane isn't the only Gresham professor to take to the airwaves in recent days. On Friday, 2 October, Professor Daniel Susskind was a guest on BBC Radio 4's Free Thinking programme.

The Mercers' Professor of Business joined theologian Peter Stanford, Dr Jakub Kowalewski, a Senior Research Fellow at St Mary's University Twickenham, Professor Carmody Grey, from the Laudato Si’ Institute at Radboud University, and Rupert Read from the University of East Anglia.

The programme marked the 800th anniversary of the death of St Francis is Assisi and asked what we can learn about issues such as the wealth gap and our relationship with the environment and the natural world.

The hour-long programme is available on the BBC Sounds app.

Finally, Professor of Law, Clive Stafford Smith, writing in the Independent probed into the aborted execution of Christa Pike.

Professor Stafford Smith, offers his unique perpective on the case, having represented people on death row for more than 40 years.

Read the article or watch his recent Gresham lecture, Donald Trump and the Death Penalty, in which he explored what the President's drive to 'restore the death penalty', means for the 2,400 people on America's death row.
