Professor Emerita Sarah Hart is to be one of the guests on this week’s In Our Time.

The BBC Radio 4 programme hosted by Misha Glenny will be discussing MC Escher, the artist known for his impossible buildings, paradoxical perspectives, and repeating geometric patterns.

Escher visited the Alhambra in Granada and found inspiration in the tessellating shapes of Islamic art, exhibiting his work at a conference in 1954. It was appreciated by mathematicians for his intuitive geometric precision and has become some of the most famous images of the 20th century: not bad for someone who felt he was not good at maths.

Joining our former Professor of Geometry on the panel will be Marcus du Sautoy, Simonyi Professor for the Public Understanding of Science, Professor of Mathematics and Fellow of New College, University of Oxford; and Judith Kadee, exhibitions project manager and public programme curator at Hague Historical Museum.

In Our Time is described as “essential listening for the intellectually curious” and a place to explore the characters, events and discoveries from history, religion, culture, science and philosophy that have shaped our world.

The programme will be broadcast on BBC Radio 4 on Thursday, 16 April from 9.15am, and available on BBC Sounds.
