The Gods of Ancient Greece

This Gresham College Podcast episode features Professors Melissa Lane and Ronald Hutton exploring ancient Greek religion, from the origins and personalities of the gods to sacrifice, prayer and everyday deals with deities.

They discuss philosophers’ challenges to traditional beliefs, religion’s tensions with Athenian democracy, and mysterious initiation rites, including the Eleusinian Mysteries. The conversation concludes with Greek beliefs about the afterlife and a curious tale of the goddess Athena seeking refuge with the philosopher Proclus.
