Gresham College is heading to Durham

Join us this autumn for inaugural Gresham In The North lecture series!

This autumn, Gresham College is partnering with St John’s College for three special lectures. This limited series sees some familiar faces return.

Professor Sarah Hart’s lecture, A History of the World in four Algorithms, will take place on Thursday, 15 October at 5.30pm.

Algorithms are fundamental to the story of mathematics – they’ve been around for over 4,000 years. This lecture explores four key algorithms that have not just shaped pure mathematics but have found unexpected applications in areas as diverse as nuclear physics, filmmaking, medicine, and music. Then, Visting Professor Ian Mudway will give the lecture The Life Cycle of a Holiday on Thursday, 26 November at 5.30pm, which will unmask the hidden biological debt incurred by global mobility. Find out more

The inaugural season ends with Professor Robin May on The Future of Medicine will be given on Monday, 14 December at 5.30pm, in which we will explore medical discoveries that might be just around the corner, the ethical challenges they may bring with them, and how best to stack the dice in favour of a healthier future for humanity. Each of these lectures will be offered in a slightly abridged version for sixth formers and take place in the afternoon, at 3pm.

As with all Gresham College lecture, tickets are free but must be booked in advance. For those who cannot attend in person, they will be available to watch live online.

The partnership has been pioneered by Professor Jolyon Mitchell, Principal of St John’s College, Durham, and former guest speaker at Gresham College.
